Contact with the Marwari community, owner of havelis of Shekhawati

At present the majority of the havelis of Shekhawati are abandoned, left empty, and in a very bad state.  One of the main causes is the absence of owners as many merchants from Shekhawati have migrated to Calcutta, Bombay, Madras…etc during 19 th and 20th century. Moreover the buildings are often multi- owners’ private properties.

Putting emphasis on heritage awareness of the owners could be the key to the safeguard of Shekhawati Unique Built Heritage left by their forefathers.

We established contacts in Kalkotta, Mumbai, Chennai in order to organise a conclave of merchants in those cities.

We also requested Mawari associations/trusts organizing a meeting in their home town in Shekhawati to give us a slot in their own program to address the merchants present on heritage related issues.

We shall continue to take similar opportunities in future.
